I'm having some problems with neighborhood hooligans and would like to set
up a resonably priced, wireless outdoor security system that logs activity
real time to a home PC.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I've googled it and checked in with the security group, but the
information is overwhelming and seems geared toward the professional
tradesperson.

If this is the wrong group, does anyone have a more appropriate place to
ask?

TIA..
Rich

Check out www.x10.com. The only limit is your imagination (and your budget).

And their pathetic quality.

Define (for yourself, if not us) "logs activity real time"

You can get a "slow record' VCR that can record 16 hrs on
a tape.

A difficulty with outside is that motion sensors are
often all but useless, depending on what "outside" is.

Trees, animals, stuff blowing all cause false alarms.

So cameras are abundant. I'd look at a wired low-light
camera going into about any video card with "video in".

http://motion.sourceforge.net/
is a project for linux/bsd that might give you some ideas to voice
more specifically what you want.

If you find anything of interest would you mind
reporting back here.

I'm building a house out at the lake. Probably be
looking for something similar by the end of the
year.

I'd like to go as far as having a monitor
mounted where the clowns could see themselves.

No doubt there are some stupid enough to watch
themselves on TV while they are breaking in.

there are a bunch of wireless Ethernet cameras that would work fine for you

remember that B&W will work better under low light conditions

check your local computer store or security camera store about 150.00/camera
should do it!

You can even put the camera on the internet and watch it from work!

These only work under windows 98. I emailed the guy. There's a reason
why they are cheap.

most (at least the ones I found) of the internet camera's /wireless
camera's do not work very well with low light.

A win98 server.. nice and stable.. not. Don't forget to reboot it once
a day.

Greg, check out uviewit.com, they have a 4-cam system. I am using it
with my dv cam and a usb cam simultaneously and the motion detection
is great.
