Light a candle. let it burn a minute or so to get some burnt wick,
and then blow it out, You'll get some smoke, but not enough to
trigger any alarms. OR get someone with a cigarette to do the same
thing.

Some buildings have systems which move the dampers in the air ducts so the
air currents change periodically. That way the air is exchanged throughout
the building and there's a sense of air movement, but not a continuous
draft. Maybe that's the source of your "weird air currents".
