Hey Jim, I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

Vicki mentioned in a post a few weeks ago that her employer uses and buys
National Refrigerants products and it seemed to suggest that they get it
direct and that the cost is cheaper. . Do you sell direct or only through
United or another supplier?

Secondly, what about all those NRP Products, are they just relabeled
products or does NR actually make them?

The reason I ask is I opened an account with United Ref who sells NRP
products, and I also found out that one man owns not only NR but also Bally
Coolers, Trenton, Continental Refrigeration systems, and the list goes on
and on and on. Just how deep does the pocket of this one guy go? It seems
like he's up there with Bill Gates!

I bought some gauges and hoses that have NRP's label on them and both Mark
and myself personally don't care for them. But everything else we bought
seemed fine.

Well, I just wanted to know if NRP also owns United and what the sales
practice is of NRP and about their products. If answering any of these
things puts you in jeopardy then ignore this post. I was somewhat amazed at
how big and how long the arms stretch out from your employer.

I'm not Jim, but United and NRP are sister companies.

What didn't you like about the hose's, for I buy them and haven't had
problems with them.

I believe, most if not all the products are made by them.
(I may be wrong)

NRP & United are HUGE indeed.

Maybe its a private holding, Steve.

I was awestruck when I heard what this one guy owned, and there was a report
about him (I just saw the picture) of him receiving an award of some kind
from ASHRAE or something like them.

My drinking buddy works for United. The company is owned by a John Riley.
They have a guy at the corp. office called the "French pirate". The pirate
sources products, then has them contract manufactured (a private labeling
operation). United also owns and operates a giant refrigerant reclaiming and
bottling facility in NJ.
United buys out struggling independent wholesalers or bankrupt ones like
Pameco, nationwide.
As far as the quality of the NRP stuff, I do not care for any of it, IMHO. I
am not into supporting monopolies or consolidators. But on the positive
side, United treats its' employees and customers well.

Could be the same issue I had with Yellow Jacket for a while...I buy a new
set whenever they start to show signs of wear. I went to my usual supplier,
grabbed a bag and later that night, when I was cleaning the van out and I
remembered the hoses...put them on, and my first thought was...wow, these
are a tad stiff compared to the others.
I didnt think much more about it, thinking that it was either a fluke, or I
had grabbed a bag of the better hoses or something..and the next day, I
fought with the hoses all damn day trying to get used to the fact that they
simply sucked. I ended up stopping off at another supplier and got a set of
Robinair labeled hoses, and thus far, havent had an issue with them. Seemed
that for a while, all the Yellow Jacket labeled hoses were extremely stiff,
to the point that even after a week hanging in the van, they still wanted to
coil back up and that made for hell when you went to grab the manifold, move
them out of the way..etc..

The problem I had with the manifold/hoses are listed:

Thought I was getting a good vacuum, but either the hoses or manifold was
closing off.

Thought I was charging and turned off the tank and the pressures stayed the
same on the gauges. I loosened the hose and liquid came out. Then went back
to charging and it worked until I started putting liquid in. Tried other
hoses and it did the same thing. Tried other manifolds with the original
hoses and it did the same thing. So, both were bad? NEVER had anything like
this happen before. Went back to my 12 year old gauges and no problem.

This has happened several times with this NRP manifold, and I will never buy
one again because of these undesirable events. Of course the customer was
standing right there and wondering why I and Jr can't simply put gas into a
system. Made us look incompetent.

I had a similar experience with a set of 'enviro-safe' hoses branded by
'MasterCool'.

They seem to have the same fitting as several manufactures of hoses.

I found out that the enviro-safe end was the problem on this particular
unit.

I had been using the adapters made by Robinair, with no problems in like 5
years.
They are a little bulkier, but work like champs.

Since the episode with the Mastercool hoses, I got a set of hoses by
Amprobe, with the 'enviro-safe', 'swivel' ends.
The ends are made more like the Robinair adapters, and the swivel ends are
superior.

Since using the Amprobe swivel hoses, I won't use anything else.

I just wish they were the better 'black', 'non-permeable hoses.

Do all the stores (United) close for 1/2 day on Good Friday? Just curious.
Very un-PC, but I think it's great. And if it's company wide--wow! Must cost
a fortune.
