Fixer-upper house. Bathroom shower fixture leaks ignored to the point
wall behind crumbled. Salvaged old tiles without breaking (like 25) since
wall was "melted". Put Hardiboard up.

Want to put old tiles back up since the rest of shower is ok. I doubt I
can find replacements and if I did it would probably would not match. Got
a lot of the old adhesive off with a various tools but there's still some
adhesive on parts of tiles including filled the channels.

Adhesive appears to be like a light grey clay color. My guess it's been
up for 10-20 yrs?

Is getting all the adhesive off really necessary or if I have it fairly
flush with the tile back going to be fine?

What will get the remaining stubborn adhesive off or soft enough to elbow
grease it off if it's necessary?

Just as an "I wonder if..." thought, I put a torch to the adhesive hoping
to soften it. NG to my surprise!

Thanks!!!

The grey color and heat resistance points to thinset. If it's that
well bonded you don't have to remove it all. As long as it's not lumpy
on the back and going to cause problems with the tile not sitting flat
on the Hardiboard, you can go ahead and thinset the tile back in place.

that's funny, you never know till you try..you probably baked it in
more, lol

I have a friend at the local pro privately owned home shop, I always
ask him these type of questions. I've never tried to remove old
adhesive or thinset, Im sure someone knows
what was used back then...

but, OTOH, sounds like if they will lay flat with no more than
say...1/8 old glue...remaining
then set them with 3/8 notch trowel...I would also make a die for them
to pass through to ensure consistency in thickness...if one won't slide
through...it will set up on the wall.
AND, just keep the mortar tad heavy to ensure they don't bottom
out..but float...then you know wall is flat...but, you don't wanna know
from me, I am amatuer pro.

Thanks. Anything even remotely loose is gone. I'll bring one with me when
I get the adhesive and hopefully someone knowledgeable can have a gander
at it.

why are you making such drama out of this
glue the mess to the wall and be done with it

now you want some pimply faced kid at do it yourself world to tell you
which glue to buy?

do yourself a favor, don't take the tile with you man...

just go getcha some good thinset...then...stick it and forget it...

give it a couple days drying before grouting (at least one day)

give it 2 weeks before sealing...(there are next day sealers, but I
don't see how one can seal with water still in the walls

making me tired

That moronic attitude is why the ****ing **** is falling off now. Too bad
the wall was so ****ed up. I bet on the drywall underneath it said
"Installed by chickenwing the 1st".

Your advice sucks.
Your attitude sucks.
....and is probably why the general group consenses is you are a flaming
asshole. I now join them.
